The Big Country FCA Rex Fleming Male Athlete of the Year Award is sponsored by Mark Miller, Edward Jones Investments. We are grateful to Mr. Miller for his continued support of the FCA ministry.
Big Country FCA congratulates Brady Miller, a senior football player and FCA member at Abilene Cooper High School, as the recipient of the 2021 Rex Fleming Memorial Male Athlete of the Year award.
Miller created an inspiring resume during his time at Cooper, weaving together an impressive list of on-the-field successes and accolades with a Christlike example of leadership and grace while off of it.
As a three-sport athlete between football, track and powerlifting, he was a three-time all-district selection in football, tabbing the District 3-5A Defensive Player of the Year in 2020.
During his senior season, he was selected as a captain for the Cougar football team by his peers. Cooper Head Football Coach Aaron Roan noted Miller’s leadership and encouragement to his teammates while also looking for ways to improve in everything that he pursued.
“Brady is a lead by example person,” Roan said. “He arrives early, stays late, takes coaching and applies it to get better each day. He is a positive young man always encouraging his teammates to help them be the best they can be for the team. He is one that I would lean on for chemistry of the team. He did whatever was asked of him to help our team be successful.”
In the classroom, Miller maintained a GPA of 96 while taking upper level and dual credit courses. For his academic efforts, he earned the 2020 Great American Rivalry Series Scholar Athlete Award as well as a 2nd Team Academic All-State selection.
Miller is an active member in the youth group at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, leading studies and participating in the church choir. He’s also been involved in the Cooper FCA since he came to the campus as a freshman.
To cap to a stellar career, Miller has been selected to play in the 2021 Big Country FCA All-Star football game in June.
“It has been a joy having the opportunity to watch Brady grow and develop into the young man he is today,” Roan added. “He sets goals and is driven to achieve both individually but more importantly as a team.
“He exemplifies what it is to be a teammate and the type of young man you want on your team: positive, dedicated, hardworking, accountable, and enthusiastic. He has been so fun to watch since the first time he entered our campus.”
The Rex Fleming Memorial Male Athlete of the Year Award is named in honor of Rex Fleming, a vibrant young man who in 2012 took his final breath at 10 years old after a two-year battle with cancer.
Some might say that Rex lost his battle with cancer, but that’s not the case. Cancer may have taken his earthly body, but it never touched his heart nor his soul. Those always belonged to God, just as Rex does.
